Why DTG Pretreatment Makes or Breaks Print Quality

DTG pretreatment is what makes the difference between a vivid, durable DTG print and a streaky, faded one. The pretreatment is a cationic polymer solution that holds anionic pigment ink on the fabric surface instead of letting it sink into the fibres. Without it, especially on dark fabric, the print falls apart in the first wash.

What pretreatment does, chemically

DTG pretreatment contains water, polymers, binders and functional additives. Two things happen when it’s applied and cured on fabric:

  1. Microfibre smoothing - the polymers fill in surface roughness and stray fibre ends, creating an even surface for ink droplets to land on.
  2. Charge attraction - the cationic (positively charged) surface attracts the anionic (negatively charged) pigment particles in DTG ink, pinning the ink to the surface.

The result is an ink-receptive layer - ink stays where it lands instead of wicking into the fabric fibre.

Why it matters on dark fabric

White DTG ink without pretreatment sinks into dark fibres and effectively disappears - the dark fibre absorbs and scatters the white pigment. Pretreatment holds the white on the surface as a dense underbase. CMYK on top then reads against opaque white instead of fighting against navy or black.

For light fabric, pretreatment use is lighter (or skipped on plain white cotton) because color ink doesn’t need to compete with a dark background. The risk with skipping pretreat on light fabric is duller color and slightly fuzzy edges from ink wicking.

Application steps

  1. Clean / de-fuzz - remove dust, oils and surface fuzz. Lint-roll or compressed-air blow.
  2. Spray evenly - use a calibrated pretreatment machine or HVLP gun; avoid streaks, puddles or dry patches.
  3. Spread - use a squeegee or roller for uniform penetration into the fibre matrix.
  4. Dry / cure - heat-press at 160 °C for 20–40 seconds, OR pass through a tunnel dryer at equivalent thermal energy.
  5. Inspect - fabric should be dry to the touch with no sticky residue and no visible white-haze patches before printing.

Dark vs light garment dosing

  • Dark fabric: 30–40 g/m² typical pretreatment coverage; full white underbase passes
  • Light fabric: 10–20 g/m² typical coverage; fewer or no white passes
  • Cotton blends: scale to fibre content (more polyester = lighter pretreat)
  • Synthetic: pretreatment chemistry differs - confirm with the ink supplier before mixing brands
